KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Homicide detectives in Kansas City are trying to learn what led to a shooting that killed a man inside a home near East 42nd Street and Park Avenue before dawn Saturday.
Kansas City police were sent to the 4200 block of Park Avenue at about 4 a.m. after a call about gunfire. Officers went in and found the man lying unresponsive on a floor in the house with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Emergency crews rushed him to a hospital. He died there several hours later, police said.
Detectives said they do not yet know what set off the shooting. No suspect had been named and nobody was in custody as of Sunday morning, and the case is being handled as a homicide.
Police did not release details about the man beyond saying he was an adult. They have not said whether the people in the house knew one another or whether anyone else was inside when the shots were fired.
The shooting happened in the dark hours before sunrise on Halloween, a night when many Kansas City neighborhoods were busy with trick-or-treaters and parties later in the day. Officers spent the morning canvassing the block around East 42nd Street and Park Avenue and processing the home for evidence.
The death adds to the list of homicide cases Kansas City detectives are working this year. Police typically release a victim’s name after relatives have been notified, and they have asked neighbors who heard shots or saw anyone leaving the area around 4 a.m. to come forward.
People with information about the case can call Crime Stoppers in Greater Kansas City, which accepts tips by phone, on its website and by smartphone app. Callers do not have to give their names, and a useful tip could bring a reward.
