About 50 years ago, I finished my mission in France, returned to BYU to finish my education, and met Kathy, my beautiful wife. What are your hopes and plans for your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ 50 years from today? I shared some of the following principles with students at the Brigham Young University devotional earlier today about how to keep their faith strong over the next 50 years of their lives. • Remember you are a son or daughter of God and the spiritual feelings that draw you to Him will grow as you respond to them. • Keep your hope in Jesus Christ a burning, bright, powerful star in your life. • Look for the hand of the Lord in your life. • Embrace the gifts and protections of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. • Diminish the distractions and magnify the good that focuses your attention toward the Savior. • Be spiritually prepared for the challenges that will come into your life. In five decades from now, Kathy and I will have completed our mortality, but if the Savior has not yet returned, many of you will be here, reviewing your life as 2073 begins. Fifty years ago, I had a testimony of the Savior, but today I share with you my sure and certain witness that He lives, that He is resurrected, and that He calls to each of us, “Come unto me.” He makes our eternal lives possible. Do not ever forsake the great endowment of blessings and power you have been given from God. Embrace the blessings. Do everything within your reach to keep your faith growing with a brightness of hope in the redeeming love of our Savior. His outstretched hands will reach to your outstretched hands and expand your faith beyond anything you can imagine. “Press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men" (2 Nephi 31:20). “A perfect brightness of hope," born of love for God and all men. That is what we want for you in the new year. Accompanying that bright hope will be the undeniable whisper that God loves you, that Christ is your Advocate, that the gospel is true. Its brightness will remind you that in the gospel there is always, every day a new chance, a new life, a new year. Because of Christ’s gift, the best things in life are ours if we steadfastly keep believing and keep trying and keep hoping. Face global conditions and your personal challenges with hope. Refuse to accept the world for what it appears to be. Shine the brightness of your hope on it and make it what it ought to be. Be that light you were brought to earth to be, never to be extinguished.

For me, deep-sea fishing has been infrequent but instructive. Success requires patience, persistence, and prayer. As we begin this new year and make resolutions to improve things in our lives, these three requisites for successful fishing can help us. First, be patient. As with fishing, real change requires time—and often a lot of time. It is tempting to expect immediate results and then become disappointed when things don’t work out exactly as planned. This may be why the Apostle Paul counseled us to “run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Second, be persistent. Keep at it, even when things get difficult. Push through the tough times, and realize that even small victories mean you are having success. The Savior “waxed strong in spirit” (Luke 2:40) as He grew older. We too can wax strong in spirit and in our talents and habits if we persevere. Third, be prayerful. Call upon God for the strength you need as you labor diligently to become a better version of yourself—a better disciple of Jesus Christ, a brighter light in the world. For “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). Happy New Year, my dear friends. May the Lord bless us all as we endeavor to become more like Him.

Nearly 20 years ago, while serving in the Area Presidency in Brazil, I had the privilege of having lunch with Pelé in a restaurant in São Paulo, Brazil. We spoke of things that matter eternally. We spoke of our Heavenly Father and of the gifts we receive from heaven. He acknowledged that his athletic ability was a special gift that had come to him. We agreed that we should use our gifts from God to bless the lives of others. He was aware of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and knew Church members. He spoke of his respect for the important service of the Church of Jesus Christ. We also shared a copy of the Book of Mormon with him. He loved his children very much and spoke of the joy of watching them grow and develop. I shared as a gift with Pelé this small statue of a family together. We spoke of the eternal foundation of families and the important role of fathers and mothers. Pelé was very warm and kind. He signed jerseys for my sons and expressed his appreciation for the conversation we shared. It was an honor for me to spend two hours with someone who had brought so much happiness to millions as they watched him play the game they loved. We spoke little about his football ability or history, but of course it followed him wherever he was. He now has moved through the veil where football will mean very little. Our lives will be measured by our faith in the Savior, our willingness to follow Him, and the love and goodness we have shared with our family and those who encircle us.
