DENVER, Colo. — The Kansas City Chiefs had the ball at the Denver 1-yard line with the game on the line Sunday, Nov. 1, and came away with nothing, losing 28-24 to the Broncos when Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on fourth-and-goal on the last snap.

Kansas City thought it had won one play earlier. Mahomes hit Rashee Rice over the middle for an apparent touchdown, but a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped it out and moved the Chiefs back. Before that, Patrick Surtain II stopped Kenneth Walker III at the 1, Mahomes threw incomplete under pressure, and safety J.L. Skinner held Walker to no gain.

The Chiefs led 24-13 early in the fourth quarter. Denver cut it to 24-21 on a 2-yard Bo Nix touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and a two-point throw to Jaylen Waddle. Harrison Butker then missed a 54-yard field goal wide right in the rain with about two and a half minutes left, and the Broncos went ahead in two plays: a 51-yard catch by rookie Jonah Coleman and his 5-yard touchdown run.

Mahomes finished 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Emmett Johnson caught a 73-yard scoring pass and had five catches for 128 yards, and Rice and tight end Gray also caught touchdown passes. Walker ran 21 times for 69 yards, and Travis Kelce added five catches for 67 yards.

The loss was Kansas City’s second in a row and dropped the Chiefs to 5-2, a half-game behind Denver at 6-2 for first place in the AFC West. With a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, Mahomes has now lost three times in 83 career games, with 80 wins.
