Independence, Missouri – A stolen 2018 Grand Sport Corvette was recovered during a multi-agency operation at an auto shop in Independence. The vehicle, which had been reported stolen from a street in the Waldo neighborhood of Kansas City, was located thanks to an aftermarket tracking device. This recovery is part of an ongoing investigation into a series of shootings and thefts that have plagued the Waldo area in recent weeks.

The recovery operation took place on May 9, involving officers from the Kansas City Police Department, Independence Police, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s SWAT team. While executing a search warrant at the auto shop located in the 10200 block of U.S. Highway 40, law enforcement seized a significant quantity of drugs and discovered stolen auto parts. One individual with an outstanding arrest warrant was taken into custody; however, the relationship between the shop’s owner and the stolen parts remains unclear.

The Corvette was stolen on April 24, following a disturbing trend of shootings in the Waldo neighborhood. Numerous residents reported hearing gunfire as a group of suspects attempted to steal vehicles, only to be interrupted by the homeowners. The situation escalated when the suspects returned, armed, and stole the Corvette from its owner’s driveway, even as the car alarm was triggered.

Despite the fear in the community, the suspects involved in the shootings have not yet been identified. Law enforcement continues to investigate the matter thoroughly. Capt. Jake Becchina from the Kansas City Police Department noted that detectives are making progress in identifying a subject of interest related to the incident, indicating that they are actively pursuing leads that may connect the recovered Corvette to the ongoing criminal activities.

In a twist of fate, the Corvette’s owner was unaware of the vehicle’s GPS tracking capabilities until they were in the process of retrieving their insurance documents at the dealership. Upon realizing this, the owner contacted LoJack, which helped facilitate collaboration with police to successfully locate the stolen vehicle.

Trooper Justin Ewing from the Missouri State Highway Patrol stated that there remains a strong commitment to public safety. He underscored the investigative diligence required to recover stolen vehicles and bring criminals to justice. The recovery of the Corvette might serve as a crucial stepping stone in identifying and apprehending those involved in the theft and associated shootings.

Waldo residents have expressed growing concern over the string of shootings and car thefts, which they describe as a public safety crisis. One resident recounted an alarming experience when the thieves pointed guns at the owner’s house during the heist. Alarmingly, there are reports indicating that police took approximately 15 minutes to arrive after a 911 call was made during the incident.

As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information that might assist in solving not just the Corvette theft but the broader series of related crimes to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 816-474-TIPS. Community involvement is seen as critical in addressing the rising crime in the area and restoring a sense of safety for residents.
