Modern student housing complex at KCAI

Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI)

The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) is a renowned art educational institution dedicated to fostering creativity and artistic excellence. Established with a commitment to providing innovative art education, KCAI has continually expanded its facilities and programs to meet the evolving needs of students and the community. Recently, the institute acquired the Extended Stay America hotel property at 4535 Main St., transforming it into a 134-bed student housing complex to address affordable housing shortages and support growth. KCAI also upgraded its dormitories, notably with the Barbara Marshall Residence Hall, and enhanced campus amenities, including dining and academic facilities, to enrich student experiences and attract future artists.

News Summary

The Kansas City Art Institute has acquired the Extended Stay America hotel to address the affordable student housing shortage. The new facility will provide 134 beds, enhancing campus living options and promoting growth. Set to open by fall, this initiative responds to student housing challenges and is strategically located near public transport. Alongside dining improvements, KCAI continues to enhance its academic facilities to attract prospective students.

Kansas City – The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) has acquired the Extended Stay America hotel property located at 4535 Main St. This significant purchase aims to address the critical shortage of affordable student housing while supporting the institute’s long-term growth strategy. The new facility, situated in close proximity to the main campus, is set to offer a total of 134 beds, featuring 68 single occupancy rooms and 33 double occupancy rooms designed as studio-style units with kitchenettes. KCAI plans for the new student housing complex to open its doors by fall 2020.

The acquisition of this property is expected to alleviate the strain on housing options for students, as KCAI has noted a pressing need for more affordable and accessible living arrangements. A recent study underscored the urgency of such developments, revealing that many students face challenges in finding suitable accommodations. The new housing will also be conveniently located near the forthcoming Main Street streetcar extension, adding further appeal for students seeking easy transportation options.

In addition to the Extended Stay America conversion, KCAI is making strides to enhance its dining facilities. The Wylie Dining Center currently features six food stations that cater to a variety of tastes, offering Asian, Mexican, deli, salad, grilled burgers, and vegetarian options. This dining facility is open Monday through Friday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with weekend brunch available. Meals are priced at an affordable $7.50 plus tax for an all-you-can-eat experience, aimed not only at students but also at attracting local residents.

This expansion in housing and dining facilities follows the opening of the award-winning Barbara Marshall Residence Hall, which was built to replace an outdated Student Living Center. The new dormitory, designed as a modern four-story building adorned with vibrant seasonal exterior panels, will help increase KCAI’s enrollment ability from 700 to over 750 students. The previous Student Living Center, previously accommodating 180 students, will be repurposed into studio and academic spaces focused on animation and illustration.

The amenities in the new residence hall reflect a commitment to provide a secure and engaging living environment. Residents will benefit from features such as a free laundry room, fitness center, student union with meeting areas, and a dedicated gallery area specifically designed for student art exhibitions. Additionally, key card-controlled access will enhance security for all residents beyond the dining spaces.

To meet the growing demand for housing, Flint Development is proposing a new multifamily apartment building at 32 E. 46th St. This development will feature approximately 155 apartment units along with four townhomes, indicating a community effort to provide more living options in the area.

To further its mission of supporting students, KCAI is also focusing on enhancing its campus facilities, including the upcoming opening of the Paul and Linda DeBruce Hall this spring. This new building will provide additional academic facilities, thereby contributing to a more enriched educational experience.

As KCAI continues to evolve and improve its campus and housing offerings, these developments are crucial in attracting prospective students, especially in light of declining national high school graduation rates. The institute’s proactive measures in addressing student needs are essential for maintaining a vibrant academic community.
