What to Expect This Week
Forecasters are predicting that the snow will pick up late Monday night, with accumulations expected to be anywhere from 2-6 inches for the metro area. Southern areas might get even more, so make sure you keep an eye on those snow totals as we move through the week. As of noon on Monday, barely an inch was noted at Kansas City International Airport, but we know things can change fast in winter!
The cold will hit hard and fast, with temperatures expected to drop to around 0°F overnight, and highs only reaching into the single digits on Tuesday. And it’s not just the cold – wind chill values are predicted to plunge to dangerously low levels, ranging from -20°F to -30°F. Yikes! This is not the time to forget your heavy coats and mittens.
City Preparations and Public Services
The City of Overland Park is getting a head start by treating the streets Monday night. Once the snow starts falling Tuesday morning, they will transition to plowing to keep our roads as safe as possible. However, be aware that Johnson County offices will remain open on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, but some services may face disruptions due to the weather.
For those who may find themselves without shelter during this hardcore cold snap, Kansas City, Missouri is stepping up by funding emergency shelters for the unhoused. There are nine locations with a total of 400 beds available. If you know anyone in need of these resources, they should begin at the Navigation Center located at Hope Faith Homelessness Assistance Campus.
School Closures and Transportation Changes
Attention parents and students! Nearly every school district in the area has either canceled in-person classes or switched to virtual learning for Tuesday. The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) will put “Plan D” into effect, meaning all school campuses and district offices will be closed. It’s best to check directly with your school district for the most up-to-date information. Additionally, Micro Transit in Johnson County will not be in service on Tuesday.
Healthcare facilities are also feeling the weather’s grip; KU Medical Center has declared an inclement weather day, but KU Hospital will remain open to assist patients. This just shows that while the snow might pile up, our commitment to health never stops!
Trash Pickups Delayed
As for your weekly trash pickup, the city has canceled services for Tuesday and Wednesday due to the impending snow. Don’t fret, though—Wednesday’s pickups have been rescheduled to Thursday, so just remember to put those bins back out a day later!
