Kansas City: Fatal Incident on I-70 During Rush Hour
A man died after he fell while attempting to jump onto a moving tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 during rush hour traffic on Friday, June 13, 2025. The incident has raised concerns regarding safety and reckless behavior on highways.
Details of the Incident
The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of I-70 and Stadium Drive. The victim, a passenger in a black GMC Sierra pickup truck, exited the vehicle while it was traveling eastbound on I-70, just west of the Blue Ridge Cutoff. At that time, a white Freightliner tractor-trailer was following closely behind the GMC Sierra.
As the tractor-trailer driver attempted to change lanes, the GMC driver made the impulsive decision to attempt to enter the cab of the freight vehicle. The truck driver, in an effort to distance himself from the GMC, began to pull forward slowly. Following this, the GMC driver ran alongside the flatbed trailer as it moved.
The situation escalated quickly when the GMC driver jumped onto the trailer, attempting to grab a retention strap as the truck continued its motion. Unfortunately, he lost his grip and fell onto the roadway, where he was subsequently run over by the rear axle of the trailer before the truck driver could stop.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Freightliner driver was unharmed in the incident.
Impact on Traffic and Local Events
The incident led to significant disruptions on eastbound I-70, causing all lanes to be closed at I-435 for approximately two and a half hours. This closure resulted in considerable traffic delays during a busy time of day.
Due to the traffic situation, the Kansas City Royals and the Missouri Department of Transportation advised baseball fans to seek alternative routes for an upcoming game in light of the ongoing congestion.
Current Statistics and Context
