KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Sporting Kansas City rallied from an early goal down and then survived a late penalty kick to tie FC Dallas 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in its last home match of the season at Sporting Park.

Dallas went ahead in the 19th minute when Herman Johansson finished a counterattack from close range off a pass from Ran Binyamin.

Sporting answered right before halftime. Centerback Jansen Miller climbed above the defense at the far post and headed in a free kick from Owen Wolff for the first goal of his pro career. Wolff was making his first start for the club in place of the injured Kwaku Agyabeng.

The match looked headed for a draw until Miller was whistled for a handball in the box deep into second-half stoppage time after a video review. Petar Musa stepped to the spot for Dallas, but goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland dove to his right and pushed the shot away. Cleveland had never stopped a penalty in an MLS game before Saturday.

Wicky made two lineup changes after Wednesday’s loss at Minnesota. Besides Wolff’s debut start in midfield, Ruben Ramos Jr. started up front in place of Stephen Afrifa. Taylor Calheira was a threat all afternoon, getting behind the Dallas back line in the first half and later setting up one of the home side’s best looks.

Sporting had other chances. Capita Capemba sent a turning shot just over the crossbar in the 16th minute, and Dallas goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois turned away efforts from Andre Luiz in the 34th and 74th minutes.

The point leaves Sporting at 6-22-5 with 23 points. Dallas moved to 15-8-10 with 55 points. Coach Raphael Wicky’s team ends its season next weekend at San Diego FC.
